IDC Rising Star Award

Jennifer B. Groszek

Jennifer B. Groszek

2008
Rising Star
Award Recipient

Over our long history, the IDC has been fortunate to welcome many outstanding young attorneys into our membership. Beginning this year, we recognize one of our young members for their critical contributions to the growth and vitality of our association. The defense attorney selected as our 2008 Rising Star exemplifies the very spirit of the IDC with her dedication to the law, her belief in a system of justice that is fair for all, and her willingness to reach out to those in need of assistance. She is Jennifer Groszek of the Chicago law firm Gunty & McCarthy.

Jennifer is the Chair of IDC’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD) and a columnist for The Quarterly. In her tenure as Chair of the YLD, she has expanded its base and visibility by attracting new members with free CLE and lunchtime speakers. Jennifer has also coordinated events to help time-pressed attorneys give back to their communities. Under Jennifer’s leadership, the YLD’s outreach has touched lives across Illinois. Many children had warm coats and mittens this past winter thanks to the IDC clothing drive. Grade-schoolers learned a little more about the importance of reading when IDC members went into schools for Dr. Seuss Read-Across-America day. Jennifer has even asked for blood. She and her fellow YLD members challenged the attorneys of the state bar to roll up their sleeves to determine which association could donate more to the cause. The IDC trounced the ISBA!

2007-2008 President Jeffrey Hebrank marvels at her indefatigable attitude, "Jennifer shows a maturity that combines with a youthful enthusiasm that is contagious. No one can turn her down and she never flinches from the tough assignments. She has rejuvenated the youth movement in the IDC with programs and initiatives that are both unique and creative. She is a breath of fresh air and truly instrumental in revitalizing the Young Lawyers Committee nearly single-handedly. We have an energized committee and have a young rising star to thank for it. Congratulations, Jennifer. Well done.”

2008-2009 President Gregory Cochran believes Jennifer is getting the IDC name out to a brand new audience, "She has turned the YLD into a very active and successful subsection of IDC through a very high level of commitment and seemingly endless supply of fresh ideas and energy. Under Jennifer’s leadership, the YLD has significantly raised the profile of the IDC among young attorneys and segments of the community with which IDC had no previous contact.”

It is a great deal of work, but is all the work a great deal? Jennifer believes it is. Chairing the YLD and ratcheting up the number and scope of events has meant dedicating long personal hours to the IDC, but the rewards for that commitment are professional and personal growth. "My involvement has provided me the opportunity to meet many wonderful attorneys across Illinois. It allows me to network, write for The Quarterly, and increase my knowledge through substantive programs and committees.”

As the IDC works to help defense counsel adapt to the onslaught of judicial, legislative, and technological changes facing the practice of law today, it is Rising Stars like Jennifer Groszek who will keep the association on track. One member among the many who nominated Jennifer for the Rising Star Award put it this way, "She has done a wonderful job of attracting new members who will eventually become the leadership of IDC as a whole. I certainly hope she is among those future leaders.”

Jennifer Groszek received her Juris Doctorate from Valparaiso University School of Law in 2001. She first gained extensive trial experience while working as an Assistant State’s Attorney in Kane County, Illinois, before joining Gunty & McCarty in June 2004. Her practice areas now include general insurance defense litigation along with toxic tort, chemical exposure, asbestos, benzene and welding rod cases. She also handles pro-bono VAWA- Immigration cases of the Legal Assistance Foundation and GAL-Minor cases for Chicago Volunteer Legal Services.

She is licensed to practice in the State of Illinois and the State of Missouri as well as the federal courts of: Northern District of Illinois, Northern District of Indiana, Western District of Michigan and Eastern District of Michigan.
